1000-Lb Sisters and 1000-Lb Best Friends are both on break for the season, but the cast members are still hard at work producing new content. While both shows center around the patients’ lives, their medical teams both play important roles. The cast members’ success wouldn’t be possible without the motivation from Dr. Charles Procter and Dr. Eric Smith.

Dr. Smith and Dr. Procter might be best known for their TLC roles. However, they’re still working physicians with a list of patients that far exceeds reality stars. They’re on a mission to change lives for the better. And now, they’re speaking about their work publicly.

On 1000-Lb Sisters, many viewers felt skeptical that Tammy Slaton would ever make true progress on her weight loss journey. But after a home visit from Dr. Eric Smith, things changed. He convinced her to enter rehab for her food addiction. While there, she managed to lose enough weight to qualify for bariatric surgery.

In a new episode of The Official P.O.P Culture Podcast, Dr. Smith and Dr. Procter came together to discuss what their jobs mean to them.

“Two bariatric surgeons, two @tlc shows, one mission…@charlesproctormd from #1000LBBestFriends and I sat down on the @officialpoppodcast to talk about our passion for weight loss surgery, how we got into bariatrics, and the reality of being ‘reality TV doctors.’ Don’t miss it—stream it now.” Dr. Smith posted on Instagram, teasing a snippet from the episode.

“The reason for doing the show is not so that I can tell people I’m on a show, right? It’s because I know it’s opened doors for other people,” Dr. Procter shares. Dr. Smith agrees as clips from their respective shows begin to play.

“It’s opened the doors for not only as you said, that person who was maybe sitting in a different state somewhere and felt so nervous and didn’t wanna go do this but maybe saw us and said, ‘Okay, maybe this isn’t such a scary ordeal after all,’” Dr. Procter continues. “But also for those people who are the heavier folks who have been told ‘no’ over and over again who thought, ‘There’s just no hope for me, I can’t do anything. I’ve had those people come in and said, ‘I had just given up, I wasn’t trying. But now, you’ve given me hope that this can happen.’ Right? So if we’ve just helped out a handful of people, it’s been totally worth what that was about.”
